(08/24) This past weekend not one, but two Drouds saw action on the track. While one took his first victory of the year, the other took his first laps on the track in almost two years.
DARE 2 Team driver, Don Droud, Jr., traveled about as far south as you can go in Missouri to take on the WOW series for Jeff and Jerry Smith. Driving the familiar orange #86, Jr. won his heat race and, after an early race restart, moved up from his fourth starting spot to 2nd. He methodically followed the leader, looking for the right time to take a chance at the lead and, with three laps remaining, whistled around the top side to take the lead and the victory- his first of 2009.
With Droud, Jr. in Missouri, it was decided that I (Rodney) would slip back into the DARE 2 seat at Eagle Raceway to see if the motor issue was remedied. Initially, I was just going to hot lap the car, but when it ran well there, the team decided to try to race into the "A".
Starting 7th in my heat, I made one pass on the start but struggled to run consistent laps and wound up 6th (only 5 were supposed to transfer, but because of the car count, I tagged the rear, starting 18th in the Main Event).
In the finale I, like my brother, methodically made passes, but were done on the low side. The car was a little tight on exit, but really began to come around for me as the race progressed. In fact, the Rasmussen Auto Supply/Moses Motor Company/Complete Countertops #2 was actually one of the fastest cars on the track, thanks to Zippy. But the driver ran out of gas as the laps clicked off and took home a 7th place finish.
With Jr. returning to Knoxville this weekend, we're not sure when our next race is scheduled. Stay tuned for more updates.
