 | Lows that were HIGHS | | |
(04/29) It's been almost two weeks since the 2010 season opener for the DARE 2 Team and I still can't believe how things turned out. For every high there was a low. Or maybe better yet, if there seemed to be a low our team experienced, it became a high. Let me explain.
I was in charge of drawing for our heat race and I ended up getting the #67 ball from the cage. That was #67 out of 75 total. What this meant was that we'd start 8th in the first, and hardest, heat of the night- "low" But Jr. had the Rasmussen Auto Supply/AS Inc. #2 flying around the track on his own groove. I mean he was FAST!- "high" But when the final lap was run, he could not get by a car that had a hard time holding his line and we ended up 5th- "low"
From the minute he pulled in, Isaiah was hard at work trying to figure our passing point situation- "high" We knew it was gonna be virtually impossible, but through the next three heats we held our breath and eventually learned that we did indeed make the "A" Feature- "high" So we went to work to on the chassis set-up (utilizing our new Dri-Bar) and how we'd fuel the motor.
The line-up showed that we'd start 15th in the main event, with many of the top dogs up front- "low" From the drop of the green, Jr. steered our black Maxim to every conceivable spot of the track and had moved into 9th within two laps- "high" It was obvious that his lap times were every bit as fast as the leaders, but we were a straightaway behind- "low" but a few well-placed cautions bunched the field and gave us some great opportunities to make further ground, and Don took advantage- "high"
With 10 laps remaining, he had worked his way up to fifth and was going for more. There was a red flag thrown with 8 laps left and we just knew it would put us in great shape to race with the leaders. From the start it looked as though the tires may have sealed over and, even though he was still fast, Jr. hadn't made any ground. With twenty-two laps down, Jr. slowed coming off Turn 2, and the motor sounded sour. He pulled into the work area to see if a plug wire had dropped off, but it was to no avail; apparently the motor was broken- "low" The entire team couldn't have been any more devasted, especially Jr.
However, we took the car home and found that even though we wouldn't be able to race the next night, the motor situation was not as terminal as originally thought. What easily could've included many broken and bent pieces ended up being localized to a small area- "HIGH"
No doubt about it, the DARE 2 Team was blessed on Friday, April 16th. It didn't end up like we had hoped, but God sure showed up at I-80 Speedway with all the HIGHS of the evening.
We'll get back at it on Thursday, May 27!
